The “pirate” life was not for Zoe Saldaña.

While speaking at the BFI London Film Festival on Saturday, the 46-year-old “Avatar” star reflected on a negative experience starring in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Saldaña played pirate Anamaria in the original 2003 film, but did not return for any of the sequels.

“Through that experience, I knew the people I wanted to work with,” she said, according to Variety.

“The crew and cast are 99% great,” she added, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. But if the studio, producers and director don't approach it with kindness, attention and consideration, such a big production can turn into a really bad experience and you could go overboard. And I kind of did that.

“Pirates” was one of Saldaña’s earliest film appearances early in her career. Her next film was “The Terminal,” in which she played a Customs and Border Protection officer. She praised the film's director, Steven Spielberg, for making her realize that working on big films doesn't always have to be so bad.

Why Zoe Saldana rejected Taylor Sheridan and “Special Ops: Lioness” and then changed her mind

“I worked with Steven Spielberg eight months later and he restored my belief that great can be great,” Saldaña said, according to the media.

The “Star Trek” actress has previously spoken about her negative “Pirates” experience, telling Entertainment Weekly in 2022 that the production was “just a little too big for me” and “the pace was a little too fast.”

Zoe Saldana felt okay to “relive the pain of losing her father” while filming “From Scratch”

“I didn't have a really good experience with it overall,” she told the outlet. “I often felt like I was lost in the trenches, and I just didn’t feel like that was OK.”

Last year, Saldaña spoke to BBC Radio 1 and blamed “poor management” for the poor experience. But she said that Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the franchise, has since apologized. “Years later, I was able to meet Jerry Bruckheimer, who apologized for putting me through that experience because he really wants everyone to have a good experience on his projects,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2022. “That really moved me.”

Despite the difficult production, Saldaña previously told BuzzFeed UK that she was happy with the film itself.

“The machine was too big for me and too out of control,” she said. “I am very proud of what I see on screen. How difficult it was to get there, I never want to go back.”

Since then, Saldaña has played key roles in some of the most successful blockbusters of all time, including Uhura in the latest Star Trek film trilogy, Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, two Avengers films, and Neytiri in James Cameron's “Avatar” series.
