“Years in the Work”: The Rock introduces his new film with director JJ Abrams

WWE veteran Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of the busiest men in entertainment. The wrestler-turned-actor has several upcoming films lined up and he recently announced plans to add another film with the Star Trek director JJ Abrams. The Rock recently shared a photo with the director and revealed subtle details about the upcoming project, which has already piqued curiosity among fans.

The Rock introduces his new film with director JJ Abrams

The Rock's latest film Reddirected by Jake Kasdan and starring Chris Evans, JK Simmons and Co. is scheduled for release on November 15th. Ahead of the release of the highly anticipated action comedy, The Rock announced his new film on social media, saying the film has been planned for years.

“We've been working on this for years – we finally broke bread, we drank, we laughed, we talked about life, love, stuff about men and took the time to indulge our passion for films and storytelling let. Then we raised our glasses and clinked glasses… Yes, it will be fun. JJ & DJ. From the mind of Zak Penn,” The Rock wrote on X and Instagram, sharing a photo of him with director JJ Abrams.
As The Rock named Zak Penn, he could be the lead writer of the project, who has a number of impressive works under his belt including “Last Action Hero”, “Behind Enemy Lines”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “Ready Player One” and “Free Guy.”
The Rock did not provide any further details about the film. While the mysterious project is under wraps, TheInSneider, a former industry insider, claimed that it would be an '80s-inspired throwback. “I'm told it's “a fantasy film with some Last Starfighter vibes,” said a source, who added that the film isn't set in space and that it's clearly something of a throwback. They noted that the script has received mixed reactions from industry insiders who have read it – but hey, you can't please everyone,” said TheInSneider.
“The Rock” is linked to several upcoming films, including “Moana 2”; A24’s highly anticipated “The Smashing Machine”; a Moana live-action film and Fast X: Part 2.
