Yankees fans banned from Game 5 of the World Series after disrupting the Dodgers' Mookie Betts

Major League Baseball and the New York Yankees have suspended the two fans who disrupted Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts.

In the first inning of the Yankees' 11-4 victory, Gleyber Torres hit a foul ball down the right field line. The ball landed in the stands and Betts made a fantastic catch along the wall.

However, as Betts fell from the wall, two fans attempted to dislodge the ball from Betts' glove and rip the glove from his hand.

The referee immediately called for fans to intervene and ruled Torres out while security rushed to the area.

The fans were identified as Austin Capobianco and John Peter. The two fans are season ticket holders and had prepared for a moment like Tuesday evening.

“We always joke about the ball in our area,” Capobianco told ESPN. “We won’t bother attacking. If it’s in our area, we’ll go up ‘D’.”

“I know when I'm in the wrong and as soon as I did, I was like, 'Guys, I'm out of here.' I patrol the wall and they know it.”

The Yankees released a statement regarding the incident on Wednesday.

“Last night, two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for egregious and unacceptable physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts. The safety of players, fans and stadium staff is the fundamental element of every event at Yankee Stadium and that cannot be compromised,” the statement said.

“Tonight is the last home game of the year and we want all the passion of our fans to be on display. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, but the exuberance of supporting your team can never translate into intentionally putting players in physical danger. The Yankees and Major League Baseball have a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior exhibited last night. These fans will not be allowed to attend tonight's game in any way.

The Yankees are looking to avoid elimination for the second game in a row as they trail 3-1. They send ace Gerrit Cole to the mound to keep their season alive while the Dodgers start Jack Flaherty.

Game 5 begins at 8:00 p.m. ET on FOX.
