“Wolverines open May era with host Cleveland State.”

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan men's basketball teams open the 2024-25 regular season and the Dusty May era against Cleveland State on Monday (November 4) at Crisler Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.

Notes

• A new era for men's basketball at Michigan began with the hiring of Dusty May as the 18th head coach in program history. Despite two fundraisers, UM's game against Cleveland State will be the first official game for the Maize and Blue in May, following two meetings against Oakland (October 20) and Toledo (October 25).

• Michigan defeated Oakland 92-48 and Toledo 96-92 in charity events benefiting Forgotten Harvest and CS Mott Children's Hospital, respectively.

• In two games with more than 90 points, UM averaged 94 points. The Wolverines shot 48.2 percent (66 of 137) from the field and 42.1 percent (24 of 57) from distance. In total, six Wolverines averaged double figures – Roddy Gayle Jr. (16.5), LJ Cason (14.0), Will Tschetter (13.5), Vladislav Goldin (12.0), Sam Walters (11.5) and Danny Wolf (10.0). Wolf added 10 rebounds. He had 11 points and 13 rebounds against Oakland and nine and seven against Toledo.

Tre Donaldson was the leading facilitator for the Maize and Blue, recording six assists against Oakland and five against Toledo. Four other Wolverines had more than five assists in the two games – Ruby Jones (six) and Gayle, Wolf and Nimari Burnett everyone had five.

• With a 21-15 record last season, Cleveland State achieved its third straight season with more than 20 wins. CSU has won the Horizon League regular season twice in four years (2021, 22) and finished second in 2023. The Vikings reached the semifinals of the Horizon Tournament four straight times, won the championship in 2021 and fell in 2023.

• Cleveland State lost leading scorer and first-team All-Horizon League forward Tristan Enaruna (19.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg) to the NBA. CSU lost a total of four starters and will be without two of its other top offensive players from a year ago – Tre Williams (12.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and Drew Lowder (11.4 ppg, 2.9 apg).

• In their first meeting in 12 years, Michigan holds a 9-0 record against Cleveland State in the all-time series. The last matchup came at the 2012 NIT Season Tipoff in Ann Arbor, a 77-47 win for the Maize and Blue. UM has six more home wins and won both games at CSU. UM's 80-61 victory at Cleveland State's Henry J. Goodman Arena (December 7, 1991) was the Vikings' largest home crowd in school history (13,055).

• Cleveland State assistant coach Jay Shunnar has many ties to Michigan. He is a native of Ann Arbor and graduated from Michigan in 2014. Locally, he coached at Skyline and Huron High Schools before becoming a grad assistant (Michigan) in 2018 and a special assistant (Cleveland Cavaliers) in 2019 under former UM coach John Beilein.
