WNBA players opt out of the CBA

The WNBA players are looking for more.

A day after the end of a groundbreaking season for the league, the WNBA Players Association announced Monday that it was opting out of the collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA, which expires in 2027, will now end after next season.

“It’s business,” part of the PA announcement read.

The move had been expected for months. The WNBA is already on an upward trajectory, seeing explosive growth in TV ratings, sponsorship interest and viewership this season. The new media rights deal alone is reportedly worth $200 million per year, more than three times the current package. Sponsors are streaming into the league and the individual teams. The expansion fee for the Portland team was $125 million, and there is another team to come.

But player salaries and the players' share of the league's revenue lag far behind. It is estimated that players receive about 10% of the WNBA's revenue, compared to the 50% of NBA players from that league.

The W's minimum salary is $64,154, while the supermax is $241,984.

“With the historic 2024 WNBA season now in the books, we look forward to working with the players and the WNBPA on a new CBA that is fair for everyone and lays the foundation for growth and success in the years to come ” the league said in a statement.
