Witnesses sought after fatal Gorman crash

California Highway Patrol officials said they were looking for possible witnesses to a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday evening on Interstate 5 in a fairly remote stretch of road in Gorman.

CHP Officer DC Williams said Thursday that the Fort Tejon CHP station was alerted to a 911 call about a fire that was believed to have started shortly after 9:30 p.m

He said after the initial fire was extinguished, a single person was found in the burned-out remains of the 2012 Honda, which was all that was initially apparent from the debris at the scene.

Williams said officials are still gathering evidence to determine what caused the crash, so any witnesses who may have seen anything are asked to contact the Fort Tejon Thermal Plant.

Williams said the car was found over the west side of the southbound lane of Interstate 5, south of Gorman School Road.

Next of kin had not been notified at the time of publication of this story.

According to officials, the official announcement of the identity of the person killed may not come for some time due to the nature of the fire damage.

According to Luis Garcia of the LA County Fire Department, firefighters reported receiving an alarm about the fire at 9:41 p.m.

Firefighters were on scene within 14 minutes and reported a fire that had spread to nearby undergrowth.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries while responding to the incident, according to Garcia, who could not confirm the nature of those injuries.

Firefighters reported that they stopped extinguishing operations at 11:21 p.m. after the fire reached 13 hectares. No structures were at risk.

The CHP Fort Tejon office can be reached at 661-248-6655.
