PITTSBURGH – The tape doesn’t lie.

If the Steelers' defensive players aren't foaming at the mouth after watching the tape of the Giants' 28-3 home loss to the Eagles last week, given the chance to face a weakened Giants offense and quarterback Daniel Jones hunt, someone should check their collective pulse.

The Giants allowed eight sacks and 17 quarterback pressures against the Eagles. Jones was sacked seven times, five of them in the first half as the Eagles brought their rivals to their knees.

The worst part?

The Eagles, who came into the game with just 11 sacks in five games, scored all eight of their sacks against the Giants using a four-man rush rather than an array of exotic blitzes.

“Last week was obviously an embarrassing show for us,” Giants right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor said. “We know the product we need to bring to market.”

If this product isn't light years better against the Steelers (5-2) on Monday night at Acrisure Stadium, the Giants will come home with a 2-6 record, their season in full swing and Jones in need of medical attention .

There are a number of things the Giants need to do well if they want to upset a surging Steelers team, but the most important job is absolutely protecting Jones positively.

Asked if, after watching the Eagles tape, he expected the Steelers' defense to sweat at the chance to take on the Giants' offensive line, Eluemunor replied: “One hundred percent.”

“When they see what we didn't do last game and see that our offense was kind of one-dimensional, as a team that overwhelms the passer like they do, then they think they can do anything.” “They want us,” Eluemunor said. “It is up to us to ensure that this does not happen and to control it. “Our offensive line did not perform to our standards last week and we need to do more this week.”

Given the health issues at stake, this task is likely to be difficult.

First and foremost, left tackle Andrew Thomas, the best player on the line and the second-best player on the team behind Dexter Lawrence, is out for the season with a foot injury.

Last week, second-rounder and third-round pick Joshua Ezeudu replaced Thomas and struggled mightily. Chris Hubbard, who the Giants signed from the 49ers' practice squad last week, worked at left tackle all week and is a possible starter there. Hubbard, 33, brings experience that Ezeudu doesn't have, having played in 100 NFL games.

Eluemunor, who has been the team's most consistent lineman this season, is questionable for the game with a hip injury. If Eluemunor is unable to play, starting in his place would be maligned tackle Evan Neal, who was not in the lineup for performance reasons.

Regardless of who plays, the Giants line must protect Jones or the team has no chance of winning with players like Steelers superman edge rusher TJ Watt, veteran defensive tackle Cam Heyward and linebacker Alex Highsmith are on the advance.

Watt has 4.5 sacks, 12 quarterback hits, eight tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and two batted passes, one of which came against Aaron Rodgers in last week's win over the Jets. Heyward has three sacks, 10 quarterback hits and four tackles for loss.

“In the Philly game, we gave up too much pressure early on and it kind of messed up Daniel's rhythm back there,” said Giants left guard Jon Runyan Jr. “You could tell he wasn't as comfortable as he had been in previous games , when he was really well protected. (The Eagles) were kind of chasing us up front.

“It’s not time to freak out. It's just time to come together and come together as a team, as an offense, and figure this out. We lose about five more games, we're probably out of the playoffs. “The error rate is getting smaller every week.”

Runyan said the Steelers run “a completely different style of defense than Philly with different types of players,” adding, “They're not the penetrating, moving defense.” They're big, heavy and have two gaps trying to read first , what you do. So there are different ways to benefit from it.

“I'm sure they're looking at the tape (from last week) and trying to pick some things up from it. But that's the defense I'm comfortable against. “I think we have a good game plan this week.”
