Winter weather begins tonight – snow is expected to accumulate across all of Utah's mountains

The cold is approaching – and brings rain and snow just before Halloween.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Sunday afternoon for several areas of Utah and neighboring states, including southeastern Nevada to Washington County, Utah, extending north along the I-15 corridor and encompassing northeastern Utah to Wyoming.

In southeastern Utah, areas around Monticello were also under the advisory.

NWS said snow will accumulate across all of Utah's mountains as the storm progresses, totaling up to 8 inches (20 cm) in the mountains north of I-80, up to 12 inches (30 cm) in the Ogden area mountains, and up to 12 inches (20 cm) in the mountains north of I-80 There will be 30 inches south of I-80 and a potential for 16 inches in the upper Cottonwoods.

In the Wasatch Back and Uintah County, people could see up to 5 inches, while the mountains near Park City could see up to 8 inches.

For the mountains of central and southern Utah, meteorologists expect total heights could reach 20 cm, with the potential for accumulation of up to 30 cm in the Tushars.

Valley rain and mountain snow are expected to begin Monday evening and continue through Tuesday, according to the NWS. As Wednesday progresses it will become more noticeable.

Days will remain significantly colder than the unusually warm fall Utah has experienced this year, with temperatures dipping into the 40s in northern Utah.

In the southern end of the state, high temperatures expected to be around 80 degrees today will drop to around 60 degrees by tomorrow.

Winter driving conditions are possible and traction restrictions could be introduced on mountain routes.

Motorists are urged to prepare for both and carry well-equipped survival gear.

On Halloween the temperatures will be warmer again. The high on October 31 is expected to reach the mid-50s.
