“Who’s the Boss?” Sequel scrapped on Amazon

Two IP-based projects at Amazon are not moving forward after several years of development.

The tech giant's streaming service Freevee has botched a sequel to the 1980s sitcom Who is the boss?in which original series stars Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano were set to reprise their roles. Amazon MGM Studios, meanwhile, has pulled the plug Bosch Spin-off centered around Jamie Hector's character, Detective Jerry Edgar.

The Who is the boss? The sequel found a home at Freevee in 2022 after two years in development at Sony Pictures Television, which owns the rights to the original series. In the original series, which ran on ABC from 1984 to 1992, Milano was set to play the role of Samantha Micelli, now a single mother living in the same house where she grew up. Danza was also set to return as her father, who is now retired.

Mike Royce and Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz (Netflix and Pop TVs). One day at a time) came on board as writers and executive producers when the show landed at Freevee. The late Norman Lear, whose Embassy Communications produced the original, was also an executive producer.

What BoschThe Jerry Edgar Show was one of two spin-offs that Amazon MGM announced was in development early last year. The other, which focuses on Detective Renée Ballard, received a series order in November 2023; Maggie Q plays the title character, the head of a new cold case unit in the LAPD that also stars John Carroll Lynch. (Bosch: LegacyAmazon's continuation of the mainstream Bosch Series, is also scheduled to end with the third season in 2025.)

Michael Connelly, author of the Harry Bosch novels on which all the series are based, was set to executive produce the Edgar show alongside Laurence Andries and Fabel Entertainment's Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate.
