Who is Elster in “The Penguin”? Marie Botha's character explained

Part of what makes up The penguin Such a great comic adaptation shows how little the TV series is actually based on comic books. It feels counterintuitive, but there's great joy in knowing you don't have to look far The Batman Spin-off in search of Easter eggs. Here's a great example: The penguin Episode 4 took viewers to Arkham Asylum and didn't show us the Joker.

Instead, the story focuses on Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti). The actress performs a remixed version of “The Hangman.” Batman Comics; She is one of a few characters in The penguin that comes from the source material. But when Sofia meets a fellow prisoner named Magpie, The penguin's Journey to Arkham highlights another obscure Batman villain.

Magpie's first appearance in The Man of Steel #3 (1986)

Premiered in a Superman comic titled The Man of Steel #3 (1986), Magpie is a rather strange jewel thief who only steals valuables named after birds. (I wish I could explain, but I'm just the messenger here). Eventually, Magpie is driven insane and sent to Arkham after her defeat. Over the course of their short-lived comic history, Magpie's most notable contribution was this Batman According to legend, she once shared a cell with poison ivy. She even joins the Suicide Squad for a single mission! Nevertheless, Magpie's appearance is in The penguin is undoubtedly the most prominent use of the character to date. (Like I said, she is very obscure.)

Magic is played by Marié Botha (Dickinson), who is probably the only person in the world who owns all of the Magpie comics. The actress told ScreenRant that she “ordered every single[comic]featuring Magpie on eBay” to prepare for the role – which unfortunately only lasted one episode. In Episode 4, while Sofia's mind is fading, she murders Elster by smashing her head against a table. It's safe to say that Magpie probably won't be returning in Matt Reeves' film Batman Universe, but there's always the possibility for more Arkham flashbacks. As Botha said in her ScreenRant Interview: “Part of me doesn’t feel quite ready to say goodbye to Magpie yet.”
