When will Tua Tagovailoa return? Latest updates for Dolphins QB

play

The Miami Dolphins entered Week 7 following their road game against the Indianapolis Colts. Miami went 16-10 on the season and fell to 2-4. Next up is a home game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8.

Miami lost on Sunday despite outscoring the Colts on offense by 337-284 total yards. Quarterback Tyler Huntley, filling in for injured starter Tua Tagovailoa, left the game in the third quarter with a shoulder injury.

The Dolphins could soon have a big addition at quarterback, with Tagovailoa potentially returning to the lineup against the Arizona Cardinals. Here's what he said upon his return today.

When will Tua Tagovailoa return?

Tagovailoa will be allowed to practice this week for the first time since his injury in Week 2. Tua can return back in Week 8 against the Cardinals at home.

He said Monday that he will not wear a protective cap over his helmet when he returns to the field.

“Personal choice,” he explained.

Tagovailoa said he needs to be smarter about climbing in the future. His last concussion occurred on a six-yard tackle against Buffalo.

“Throughout my football playing days, I was a competitor and that was my advantage,” Tua told reporters. “When I would run away from high school, even in college, I would do the same thing. But it's a professional environment, a professional level, the best of the best. You just can't do that. I definitely have to stay more available for the team, for the organization, for the guys.”

Tagovailoa said he has been symptom-free since the day after his concussion in Week 2. He remembered the game where he was injured and seeing his family after he left the field. He expressed frustration at not being able to help as the team has lost three of its last four games.

“It's just frustrating that other than trying to train and talk to the guys, I couldn't have helped in any way,” he said. “It was a different type of leadership with our guys.”

After his concussion against the Bills, the Dolphins placed the 26-year-old quarterback on injured reserve and kept him off the field for at least four games. He said the team made this decision in his best interest. Several former NFL players expressed concerns about his future given his three concussions in the past two seasons.

“I appreciate your concern, I really do,” Tagovailoa said. “I love this game, and I love it to death. That’s all.”

When asked about the risk of him continuing to play, Tagovailoa downplayed the issue.

“Well, how much risk are we taking when we get up in the morning to go to work?” he said. “Getting into a car accident, I don’t know. Everything I think involves risk. Every time we get dressed, we all run the risk of potentially getting injured, be it a concussion or a broken bone. There’s just a risk” and everything, and I’m willing to take the risk.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said medical experts deemed it safe for Tagovailoa to return to practice this week.

“Our plan is to begin practice on Wednesday and clearance will come after some activity,” McDaniel said Monday. “But of course we do this in the hope that everything goes well so that he can play on Sunday, but that is still being clarified.”

The Dolphins will practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

“I'm not thinking about myself, I'm putting pressure on myself to come back and save the team,” Tagovailoa said. “What we have to do is look at that passing game, all 11 guys on the field, did we have a chance to score on every drive with the plays that were called? And if we can say yes, then we can look at ourselves and see what we can do to be better in the future.
