When to change your clocks in NY

play

The end of daylight saving time, when clocks go back one hour, occurs on Sunday, November 3rd. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on this day. This is the official hour to change all of our clocks back to standard time. At this point, local time will immediately change to 1 a.m. to allow for more daylight each morning.

The twice-yearly time change can cause confusion and disruption to schedules for children, adults and pets.

Here are some facts about daylight saving time:

singular term

It’s “daylight saving time,” not “changeover” or “changeover.” It's not a plural, no matter how people around you pronounce the phrase.

When exactly is it?

Since 2007, daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Previously, it started on the last Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October.

Never about farmers

Daylight saving time was not established to help American farmers. According to timeanddate.com, a few hundred Canadians in Thunder Bay, Ontario first used daylight saving time in 1908. But Germany popularized daylight saving time after it first set clocks forward on April 30, 1916, to save coal during World War I.

Daylight saving time became the national standard in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act, established as a way to further save energy. The idea was that the longer the lights are out, the less time you need to use the lights in your home.

Do all states observe daylight saving time?

Currently, Hawaii and Arizona are the only two US states that do not observe Daylight Saving Time. This also does not apply to the US territories of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Marina Islands.

Who is responsible for time?

The U.S. Department of Transportation is responsible for daylight saving time and all time zones in the United States. “Oversight of time zones has been assigned to the DOT because time standards are important for many modes of transportation,” the DOT website states.

When did daylight saving time start in 2024?

This year summer time began Sunday March 10th at 2 a.m. when our clocks moved forward an hour, part of the twice-yearly time change that affects most, but not all, Americans.

When is the shortest day of 2024?

The shortest day of the year is the first day of winter or the winter solstice, i.e. in the year 2024 Saturday December 21st.

Is summer time finally ending?

The push to stop the time change was brought to Congress in recent years, when the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, a bill to make daylight saving time permanent. However, it was not passed by the US House of Representatives and was not signed into law by President Joe Biden, so the biennial time change ritual remains in place.

A version of the law from 2023 also remained unsettled in Congress.

Which states want permanent daylight saving time?

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, by 2022, at least 29 states will have passed laws establishing year-round daylight saving time. Seven states – Alabama, Arkansas, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee, Washington and Florida – have already passed laws to permanently observe daylight saving time. However, these states still need congressional approval to enact the change.

What about the rest of the planet?

Daylight saving time now applies in over 70 countries worldwide and affects over a billion people every year. The start and end dates vary from country to country.

Sunrise becomes later and sunset earlier each day as winter approaches, and there are fewer hours of daylight overall – the Earth's tilt means the Northern Hemisphere faces away from the Sun.

Telephones and smoke detectors

Most phones and computers automatically adjust to the time change, but manual clocks need to be reset. It's also a good time to change your smoke alarm batteries.

Next year?

Unless it is eliminated, daylight saving time will begin again Sunday March 9, 2025 and is expected to end on Sunday, November 2, 2025.
