The next full moon comes tonight, and it's a big one.

This month's Hunter's Moon is a supermoon that appears visibly larger and brighter in the sky. Here's what Hoosiers should know about this and other October astronomical events.

When is the full moon in October 2024?

The Hunter's Moon, a name derived from Native American, European and colonial sources, is expected to reach its peak on Thursday, October 17, according to NASA. The moon phases this month are:

  • 🌑 new moon: Oct 2nd
  • 🌓 First quarter: Oct 10th
  • 🌕 Full moon: Oct 17th
  • 🌗 Last quarter: Oct 24th

Will the moon be full on Halloween?

No, the moon will not be full on Halloween night in 2024. In fact, you'll hardly be able to see him anymore. According to NASA, our lunar satellite will only glow at 1% illumination. This is dark. So if you have little trick-or-treaters, be sure to bring a flashlight. For safety reasons, you may also want to add something reflective to her costume.

The next full moon on Halloween won't happen for a while

The next full moon on Halloween won't occur until 2039, according to EarthSky. Why wait so long? Full moons on Halloween are rare, writes the Old Farmer's Almanac. They occur once every 18-19 years. The last time the United States saw a full moon on All Saints' Day was in 2020.

When is the full moon in Indianapolis, IN?

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the moonrise in the Indianapolis area will occur at approximately 7:04 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, and will cross the meridian at 1:14 a.m. before setting at 8:06 a.m. Friday.

The story continues after the gallery.

Why is it called the Hunter's Moon?

October's full moon is called the “Hunter's Moon,” but its name can change from year to year.

A hunter's moon is the first full moon to occur after a harvest moon that lands around the fall equinox, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. The last time we had a Hunter's Moon in November was in 2017. Other names for October's full moon by Native American tribes include the Drying Rice Moon, the Freezing Moon, and the Migration Moon.

What makes the supermoon in October 2024 so “super”?

The “super” in a supermoon often has more to do with its proximity to Earth and less, some say, than with its size.

Supermoons can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year. Visually it may not make much of an impression, but the proximity of a supermoon has an impact on Earth, leading to higher than normal tides.

How close will October's supermoon be to Earth?

Pretty close, at least by lunar standards. The moon's orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle, writes NASA. The distance varies between approximately 221,457 miles and 252,712 miles. This is due to the constant gravity between the moon, earth and sun.

According to NASA, the moon will be 222,095 miles from our planet on Thursday, making it a supermoon.

When is the next supermoon in 2024?

The next supermoon will take place in November. It is also the last of 2024. According to NASA, November's full moon will shine at a distance of 224,385 miles from Earth. By December, the moon will be fainter and another 6,000 miles or so further away.

Sometimes the moon appears red or orange. Here's why

During a partial lunar eclipse, the Moon passes through only part of the Earth's shadow, the umbra, and thus forms an incomplete alignment with the Sun and Earth. The moon appears to darken.

So why does it look red? According to NASA, this is due to the way sunlight hits the moon's surface after passing through our atmosphere.

Colors with shorter wavelengths, such as blue and violet, scatter more easily than colors with longer wavelengths, such as red and orange. The more dust or clouds there are in the Earth's atmosphere during a lunar eclipse, the redder the moon appears.

More astronomical events in October 2024, according to NASA

If you're planning on watching the night sky this month, keep the following October 2024 dates in mind, according to NASA:

  • The whole month – Look for Venus low in the west just after sunset. As soon as it gets dark, Saturn can be seen in the southeast. Mars rises at midnight and Jupiter rises in the first half of the night (it rises earlier throughout the month).
  • 14th-31st October – Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) becomes visible low in the west after sunset. If the comet's tail is well lit by sunlight, it could be visible to the naked eye. The first week and a half (October 14-24) is the best time for observing with binoculars or a small telescope.
  • October 17th – Full moon.
  • October 20th – The moon rises near Jupiter, making the giant planet appear extremely bright. You should be able to find them deep to the east starting around 10 p.m.
  • 23rd-24th October – Early risers can see Mars along with the Moon high in the south both mornings.
  • October 25th – Europa is easily visible this morning on one side of Jupiter with binoculars alone.
