When was the first Thanksgiving?

You may remember your elementary school lesson about the first Thanksgiving in 1621, when the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Tribe gathered to eat. Well, the story is a little more complicated.

A letter from Edward Winslow, an early Pilgrim, states that the Wampanoag leader, Sachem Massasoit, “with about 90 men” joined the colonists for a three-day feast, but only after the Pilgrims had begun theirs Weapons to shoot into the air. Believing he was under attack, Massasoit appeared at the settlement with warriors expecting war. Instead, they found a feast and decided to stay, with their hunters bringing five deer as a donation.
