When is National Boss's Day? The vacation started in Illiois – NBC Chicago

You may know that today is National Boss's Day (and if not, think about it before you go to the office). But you may not know that the day your boss was honored began right here in Illinois.

According to the National Day Calendar website, National Boss's Day, which falls on Wednesday, October 16, is intended to “recognize the hard-working boss who oversees the workplace.”

“Employees across the United States show appreciation and gratitude to their managers,” the website says about the holiday. “They also remember their boss’s kindness and fairness throughout the year.”

The website goes on to say that if October 16th falls on a weekend, it is customary to celebrate on the “next working day”.

The holiday's origin story begins in 1958 in suburban Deerfield, the website says, where Patria Bays Haroski worked as a secretary for the Illinois-based State Farm Insurance Company.

According to the website, Bays Haroski has registered “National Boss's Day” with the United States Chamber of Commerce for October 16th.

“She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday and he was also her employer at the time,” the website says.

In 1962, then-Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner supported registration and officially proclaimed “Boss's Day,” the story says. In 1979, Hallmark Cards added Boss's Day cards to its inventory, its website said.
