When is Daylight Saving Time 2024? When to reset your clocks

play

The chill of autumn is in the air as the days grow shorter and winter approaches, a sign that the clocks will soon be turned back.

The sun sets more than two minutes earlier each day until it sets another hour earlier at the end of daylight saving time. Between the summer and winter solstices, daylight decreases by almost six hours.

When do we get an extra hour of sleep? Here's what you should know about daylight saving time in 2024.

When does summer time end?

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on November 3rd and then resets to 1 a.m. This returns us to standard time and Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends.

Many devices like smartphones and computers automatically switch to standard time, but non-smart devices like microwaves and some car stereos, as well as all analog clocks – those with hands – will likely need to be changed manually.

Will we lose an hour or gain an hour?

In autumn the clocks are set back one hour. You gain an extra hour of potential sleep or play.

In spring the clocks jump forward an hour. When you wake up this morning you will have lost an hour.

Remember: back away; jump forward.

When is the shortest day of 2024?

This year's summer solstice gave us the longest day of the year on June 20, 2024, when we had a whopping 15 hours of daylight.

Sunrises come later and sunsets get earlier as we move into winter, and overall there are fewer hours of daylight – the Earth's tilt means the Northern Hemisphere points away from the Sun.

The winter solstice brings us the shortest day of the year on Saturday, December 21st, giving us about nine hours and 19 minutes of daylight.

What does summer time mean?

The end of daylight saving time means that there is more light in the morning and it gets dark earlier in the evening. Sunrise and sunset will be approximately one hour earlier on Sunday, November 3rd than on Saturday, November 2nd.

According to Farmer's Almanac, the idea behind Daylight Saving Time (DST) was to give us more daylight on summer evenings and then move that back to give us more daylight on winter mornings.

When do the clocks move forward?

Daylight saving time begins again when we move forward on March 9, 2025.
