With former President Donald Trump elected to a second term as U.S. commander in chief, the nation will turn its attention to next year's official transition – Inauguration Day.

The next inauguration ceremony will take place on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the US Capitol in Washington DC

What happens on Inauguration Day?

Events planned by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies include the swearing-in, inaugural address and passport verification.

Other events take place before and after the inauguration, including the inaugural parade and inaugural balls.

What is the presidential oath of office?

At about noon on Inauguration Day, the President-elect will take the following oath under Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:

“I solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully discharge the office of President of the United States and to preserve, protect and defend to the best of my ability the Constitution of the United States.”

The Vice President-elect will be sworn in before the President-elect and will repeat the same oath of office as U.S. Senators, Representatives, and other federal employees:

“I solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will show her true faith and loyalty; that I will undertake this obligation voluntarily and without any obligation.” and that I will perform well and faithfully the duties of the office which I am about to assume: “So help me, God.”

Who won the presidential election? Donald Trump wins against Kamala Harris

Former President Donald Trump won his second term on Tuesday, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 race for the White House.

It was a decisive victory after polls showed Trump and Harris competing in a close election. But enough Americans in key states were won over by Trump's focus on inflation and immigration to catapult him back into the White House. Trump's victory also comes after he faced two assassination attempts over the summer.

As election night began, the nominees captured their respective strongholds, with Harris winning much of the West Coast and Northeast and Trump picking up victories in the South. But Trump won North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, giving him enough momentum as the candidates battled for crucial swing states.
