Criticism of Cam Ward's decision-making in the first two games of Miami's conference schedule was well documented during the Canes' bye week. His four turnovers and sharp decline in efficiency put his team in some awkward positions against Virginia Tech and Cal.

Not only did he put those concerns to rest on Saturday, he also had to give the team a hug when they needed him most.

Amid a difficult day for the defense, Ward had to constantly respond to Louisville attacks in the second half, and he delivered time and time again.

A 14-play, 75-yard first-half scoring drive by Miami gave the Canes a 31-17 lead midway through the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Louisville got a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and on the very next play they recovered a fumble on Miami's return.

A minute later the game was tied.

Up until this point in the season, Ward's errors and recklessness had resulted in short fielding and changing plays. On Saturday, the Canes needed their star quarterback to stay afloat despite special teams and defensive errors.

He delivered perhaps his most comprehensive performance to date.

Ward finished 21 of 32 for 319 yards and four touchdowns and, most importantly, zero turnovers for the first time in a month.

His efficiency and precision didn't stop him from making highlight reel throws on a weekly basis that we've become accustomed to.

Beyond Ward's performance, the Canes showed what makes them one of the more explosive offenses in the country by displaying a poise they hadn't shown before. They rushed for a season-high 219 yards on 40 carries, led by junior Damien Martinez and sophomore Mark Fletcher Jr., who both ran for more than 70 yards each.

If the ground game can remain a reliable option and the team continues to show balance, Ward has a chance to maintain and even increase the dominant pace he is currently at.

Ward continues to be highly regarded in mock drafts, and like last week, the majority view him as the draft's top passer.

There's still no consistent top quarterback in the class, but as of midway through this season, it appears to be primarily a two-man race between him and Colorado's Shadeur Sanders.

Ward is also competing in a primarily two-horse race for the country's most prestigious award.

Things continue to go quite well for the Canes this season as they have the 62nd toughest remaining schedule in the country. The path is clear for Ward and Co. to continue this historic season that begins this weekend as they host the 1-and-6 Florida State Seminoles on Saturday night.

The expectations for this team continue to rise, and that especially starts with Ward in the eyes of the league. If his performance last Saturday is any indication, Miami will be in good shape going forward.
