What Bills QB Josh Allen said about WR Keon Coleman after the drop results in INT

Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman had a strong start to his 2024 season, but things didn't go according to plan in his team's 30-27 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Coleman only received two (official) targets in the game, one of which was a drop in the red zone that fell into the hands of Miami cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who was able to intercept it. The drop, which likely would have been a walk-in touchdown had it been caught, moved the Dolphins to their own three-yard line and set up a 14-play, 97-yard touchdown drive that lasted most of the game second quarter.

Quarterback Josh Allen stayed the course and did not let his trust in the rookie waver. He later targeted a two-point conversion from Coleman before hitting him for a 21-yard completion in the fourth quarter that ended with Quintin Morris' touchdown.

Allen turned Coleman's direction again on the final lap of the game and aimed a deep pass at him, which ultimately fell incomplete. However, former Buffalo defensive back and current Miami defensive back Jordan Poyer hit Coleman in the head on the play, resulting in an unnecessary roughness penalty that gave the Bills a free 15 yards and a new set of downs. It was the game-winning play that set up Tyler Bass for a game-winning 61-yard field goal and helped Buffalo win.

After the game, Allen spoke about putting his trust in the rookie after the bad fall early in the game.

“I trust him,” Allen said. “Third and longest, biggest play of the game, throw one for him. Obviously we get the flag to extend the trip, but I trust him implicitly. I love the guy and hopefully he’ll be okay.”

Coleman was ejected from the game due to injury after the Poyer hit. He was seen wearing a brace on his right wrist, but no information was provided about the severity of the injury or how much time (if any) he might be out.

Coleman has 22 receptions for 417 yards and three touchdowns so far this season. He is the second best receiver on the team after Khalil Shakir.

Throughout the offseason and regular season, Allen has consistently praised the second-round pick for his ability to make big plays and catch 50-50 balls. The biggest concern for Buffalo is making sure Coleman is healthy and ready to play soon, but a single drop won't affect Allen's decision to continue to burden him in the big moments.
