A “strong” storm system is heading toward British Columbia's southern coast, promising strong winds and heavy rain across much of the region.

Environment Canada has issued a series of special weather statements for downtown Vancouver, including Burnaby and New Westminster, Victoria and much of Vancouver Island, forecasting the storm from Sunday night into Monday.

“A relatively short but intense rain episode is expected to begin shortly after midnight,” the weather agency said in a statement on Sunday morning.

Rainfall is expected to peak on Monday morning and taper off in the afternoon. Around 40 to 70 millimeters of rain is forecast along the north coast in the Lower Mainland.

Strong southeasterly winds will affect parts of the Vancouver metropolitan area through Monday afternoon, changing to strong westerly to northwesterly winds later in the afternoon. Westerly winds will also spread into the Fraser Valley.

Environment Canada advises residents to be aware of flooding near rivers, streams and culverts and is urged to clear storm drains of leaves and debris. The wind could cause tree damage, which could lead to power outages. If flooding concerns, check the river forecast at gov.bc.ca/riverforecast.

Wind and snow warnings are also in effect Monday along many mountain passes in British Columbia, including Coquihalla, Connector, Allison Pass and Kootenay Pass.

“Strong, gusty winds, rapidly accumulating snow and blowing snow with poor visibility” are expected on the Coquihalla from Hope to Merritt and from Merritt to Kamloops. Winds along the route are expected to continue into Tuesday.

Although no heavy rain is forecast further north, a wind advisory is in effect for exposed coastal areas of northern Vancouver Island and the central coast.

Southeast winds of 80 km/h and gusts up to 100 km/h are expected to change to northwest winds of 90-110 km/h on Monday as the storm progresses.
