Wayne Rooney inspires comeback of the season as Plymouth climb out of the Championship relegation zone

Plymouth pulled off the comeback of their dreams against Preston as they somehow saved a point and climbed out of the bottom three places of the Championship.

Wayne Rooney's men miraculously fought back from 3-0 down to salvage a point in a tense six-goal thriller at Home Park on Saturday.

The Devonshire team have now moved ahead of Luton to 21st place after ending their run of two consecutive defeats.

After losing 5-0 to Cardiff and then losing 1-0 away at Millwall, Plymouth appeared to be in for another horror show.

The hosts fell behind in the 16th minute after Sam Greenwood's opener, and Mads Frokjaer-Jensen doubled Preston's lead in first-half stoppage time.

And when Brad Potts gave the visitors a three-goal lead three minutes after the break, Plymouth's decision seemed to be on the wall.

But Frederick Issaka opened the scoring just before the hour mark when substitute Andre Gray halved the deficit in the 82nd minute to bring the score to the stands.

It was the former Burnley striker's first goal for the club, having joined the club on a free transfer in early October following a spell in Saudi Arabia.

And star winger Morgan Whittaker equalized in the second minute of stoppage time, sending the home fans delirious.

Plymouth are now unbeaten in their last four home games, having triumphed in games against Sunderland, Luton and Blackburn.

Away from home, Rooney's side struggled, losing five of their six games and scoring just one goal.

With 12 points so far this season, the Hatters have slipped into the relegation zone due to their incredible draw.

Rob Edwards' men have lost three of their last four second division games.

Luton lost 3-2 away to Coventry in the early kick-off on Saturday despite leading 2-0 at half-time.

Like Plymouth, Coventry enjoyed a stunning second half which resulted in Haji Wright scoring a dramatic winner in stoppage time.
