Tickets for 2024 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers are among the most expensive in Major League Baseball history.

According to experts, the historic duel between the two traditional teams from opposite coasts, who have not met in a World Series since 1981, is the reason for the high ticket prices.

“It’s one of the most in-demand World Series we’ve ever seen. Two top teams from two major cities, both with star power, brings a lot of demand,” Chris Leyden, director of growth marketing at SeatGeek, told CBS MoneyWatch . “It offers everything you could want in terms of demand and we see that driving up ticket prices.”

“You can definitely get tickets for less, but you can definitely get tickets for more,” Leyden added. “Tickets are in high demand in both markets.”

Leyden said he has seen demand for sports championships both rise and fall, with prices for today's game falling throughout the day – given that the first pitch will be thrown out in just a few hours. However, it can be difficult to predict the direction in which ticket prices will move.

“Sometimes prices go down for championship events, sometimes they go up,” he said.

On resale sites like SeatGeek, the market determines the price. Sellers who offer tickets at too high a price will not find buyers. People who don't price high enough will find their tickets sell out quickly, but money is left on the table.

StubHub spokesman Adam Budelli said ticket purchases for the 2024 World Series on the resale platform have already surpassed sales for last year's MLB Championship Series and that this year's tournament will be the best-selling World Series in history.

Ticket prices for the cheapest tickets available for Saturday night's Game 2 are holding steady at around $950 per ticket, Budelli said.

Pricing will become more dynamic as the series progresses, depending on the outcome of each game and fan speculation.

The World Series Championship is determined by best of seven games, meaning the first team to win four games wins the title. In the event that a team wins the first four games, games 5 to 7 will not take place.

However, Budelli pointed out that it is now better for fans to buy tickets for later games as prices are stable and sellers refund buyers 100% of the ticket price if a game does not take place.

“From now on, tickets for these games are only going to get more expensive,” he said.

Budelli offered another insight about buying tickets: Typically, the best time to purchase seats is 24 to 48 hours before the game, after the market has calmed down. This is aimed at avoiding peak demand windows when prices rise, he said.

“Sometimes we see ticket prices go up right before games because there are so many people shopping waiting for them,” he said.
