Kaur's body was discovered Oct. 19 at a Walmart on Mumford Road in Halifax, according to a statement from Halifax Regional Police on Wednesday.

“The woman, an employee of the store, was found in a large walk-in oven that was part of the bakery section of the store,” the statement said. “It is important to note that the investigation has not yet reached the point where the cause and manner of death have been confirmed.”

According to the GoFundMe page, Kaur's mother was unable to find her or reach her by phone for over an hour the night her “burned” body was found.

“Mom panicked as it was unusual for her to turn off her phone during the day,” the page said. “She asked the local administrator for help. As you all now know, her charred remains were found after a few hours in the bakery’s walk-in oven.”

Kaur and her mother had worked at the Walmart location for two years, the GoFundMe page said. You emigrated from India to Canada about two to three years ago. Kaur's father and brother are still in India and the Sikh society is working to get them to Halifax “as quickly as possible.” The online fundraiser raised over $140,000 in two days and reached its original fundraising goal within 10 hours.

“No one should ever die at work,” wrote one commenter on the GoFundMe page, “and no one should ever see their child in this condition.”

Walmart and Halifax Regional Police did not immediately respond AssetsPlease comment.

A Walmart spokesperson said CBC The store is “temporarily closed as we cooperate fully with the investigation.” The company has offered counseling services to employees following the tragedy.

Locals left flowers and notes outside the closed Walmart to pay respects to Kaur and her family.

Balbir Singh, secretary of the Maritime Sikh Society, who was in touch with the Kaur's mother, said CBC The local Sikh community is mourning the loss and local police investigators have a responsibility to share their findings with the public.

“It is a truly tragic incident and everyone is deeply hurt by this and we are awaiting the police investigation,” Singh said. “We would like to know what happened to this young woman.”
