Walgreens confirmed that over 1,000 stores across America will close after the company announced that a significant number of locations will have to close their doors in June.

How many Walgreens stores will close?

According to USA TODAY, Walgreens said in an earnings report Tuesday that it will close 1,200 stores due to a slump in consumer spending.

Why is Walgreens closing?

In the statement to USA TODAY, a Walgreens spokesperson said the company is repositioning its store footprint and noted that about 25% of its stores do not contribute to the chain's long-term strategy.

The decision to close stores is part of a multiyear cost-cutting program under Walgreen's new CEO Tim Wentworth.

“This turnaround will take time, but we are confident it will deliver significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term,” Wentworth said in the statement.
