First half

Syracuse punt

7:59: LeQuint Allen runs to the 2nd. Then a pass from Trebor Pena is well defended and brings the 3rd and long pass. A screen pass to LeQuint Allen is negated at the line of scrimmage and the Orange punt again. Syracuse inexplicably suffers a delay of game on a 4th-and-8 punt. An excellent punt finally puts Virginia Tech up to 27th.

8:38: Syracuse starts this trip on the 20th

RESULT: Virginia Tech 7, Syracuse 0

8:45: Virginia Tech moves into the red zone with a play-action pass deep behind the Syracuse defense. Didn't throw well, but Stephen Gosnell was wide open enough to score 48 points. The Hokies then scored a touchdown on a 7-yard reverse that wiped out most of the entire Syracuse defense with some excellent blocking.

10:47: Virginia Tech secures its first first down of the game with a 7-yard pitch-and-catch and a 5-yard run. The Syracuse defense quickly puts the Hokies on the back foot with a 6-yard sack by Rashard Perry. Syracuse gives most of it back on an offside call and the Hokies get 6 on an end-around. Collin Schlee picks this up with a pass over the middle.

Syracuse punt

12:28: It was also a rough start for the Syracuse offense, with LeQuint Allen running for a yard and Oronde Gadsden dropping a screen pass. A short pass intended to get the blockers in front of Trebor Pena goes to 3rd and long pass to 5th and Syracuse's punt unit comes into play. Virginia Tech catches the ball on its 19th.

Virginia Tech punt

2:10 p.m.: And Syracuse is off to an even better start. Virginia Tech was playing its first series without its starting quarterback and running back, and its first play was a rollout pass that bounced off a wide receiver's chest. A third down pass failed, a wide receiver turned into a defensive back and threw the ball away on a deep pass down the sideline. Syracuse takes on its 37th

2:55 p.m.: Nice start for Syracuse as a short high kickoff leads to the Hokies starting at their 16 yard line.

Before the game

Syracuse wins the toss and shifts. Captains were Trebor Pena, Alijah Clark, Jackson Meeks and Clarence Lewis.

Virginia Tech will be without its starting quarterback and perhaps its star running back.

There aren't too many surprise misses for Syracuse football today. Defensive player Denis Jaquez is probably the most impactful. Third street quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson is also unclothed.

On the bright side, wide receiver Yazeed Haynes is here. He is unclothed but received a warm reaction from coaches and teammates. He was not in the team due to a family problem.

Syracuse will play its first home game in more than a month after losing 2-1 in a three-game road stretch.

The Orange (5-2, 2-2 ACC) lost their last game 41-13 to nationally ranked Pittsburgh. It was SU's first lopsided loss of the year. Quarterback Kyle McCord, who was excellent for most of the season, threw five interceptions and the Orange finished the season with a season-low mark.

Virginia Tech (5-3, 3-1) has won three straight games by one rebound after a season that began with playoff aspirations was derailed early by poor nonconference performance. The Hokies' most recent loss was also a good performance, a 38-34 loss to undefeated Miami that required a friendly call from the ACC replay center.

Virginia Tech defeated Georgia Tech (21-6) in its last game. The Yellow Jackets played without starting quarterback Haynes King. King played well when the Orange fell to Georgia Tech (31-28) earlier this season.

Both teams are averaging just under 31 points per game this season, although they perform significantly differently on offense.

McCord leads the ACC in passing, averaging 354.4 yards per game. Virginia Tech is the conference's No. 2 rushing team behind the league's No. 2 rushing team, Bhayshul Tuten (118.9 yards per game). Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones adds another 40 yards per game and gives the Hokies multiple threats in the run game.
