At 4:35 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service issued an updated freeze warning effective for Oregon's Lower Treasure Valley between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Friday.

The weather service says: “Low temperatures between 32 and 36 degrees will lead to frost formation.”

“Frost and freeze could destroy crops and other sensitive vegetation and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service explains. “Take steps now to protect sensitive plants from the cold.”

Frost warning – that’s what it means

Frost warnings are issued from May to October (but can be extended if necessary) when temperatures, winds and sky cover favor frost development. This is most likely when the temperature is 36 degrees or less. In some cases, the frost is severe enough to end the growing season and is then referred to as a “killing frost.”

According to the weather service, if your area is under a frost warning, cover sensitive plants before the sun goes down to retain heat near the plants, or bring plants indoors overnight if possible.
