Planes struggle to land at Heathrow as Storm Ashley hits Britain

Storm Ashley hit parts of the country with gale-force winds and torrential rain as more flights and trains were canceled.

As the storm moved across the Scottish Highlands on Sunday evening, average wind speeds reached 85mph, with preliminary gusts of at least 111mph recorded at the summit of Cairn Gorm.

Speed restrictions are in place on rail routes across Scotland due to the strong winds, while flights at Aberdeen Airport were also affected this morning. At least four flights were canceled, including one bound for London Heathrow Airport.

In England, National Rail said northern services between Bolton and Blackburn were blocked this morning by a tree on the line.

The Environment Agency had 45 flood warnings in force across England on Monday, with flooding expected, including along the south Cornish coast and large parts of the River Severn, after the river burst its banks the previous day and inundated the city of Worcester.

A further 96 locations were kept on high alert for possible flooding overnight – while in Scotland the Scottish Environment Flood Agency had 47 flood warnings, eight of which were issued by Natural Resources Wales.

What impact can storms have on your mental health?

Storm Ashley has hit the news in recent days due to flooding, power outages and travel problems in parts of the UK.

Such extreme weather events often increase anxiety and stress and can also have a significant impact on our mental health.

The drama of floods and lightning strikes can be frightening. That's why PA spoke to experts who explained why storms affect us so badly and what we can do to cope.

How does stormy weather affect people's moods and behavior?

“The weather can have a real impact not only on how we feel in the moment, but also on how we perceive the rest of the day and beyond,” explains Dr. Rachael Molitor, qualified psychologist and lecturer at Coventry University. “While sunlight has a positive effect on our mood due to its feel-good associations, dark, rainy and dreary weather can have the opposite effect.”

Media coverage of extreme weather events can also increase these feelings.

“Because much of the media coverage of storms is related to flooding, property damage and weather or life-threatening warnings, we are inundated with negative discussions surrounding storms, which leads to negative mood and therefore behavior changes,” notes the psychologist.

The unpredictability of storms can increase feelings of stress, fear and anxiety.
