UFC 308 results: Rafael dos Anjos' leg injury abruptly ends Geoff Neal fight

Rafael dos Anjos had a birthday to forget.

The longtime veteran and former UFC lightweight champion celebrated his 40th birthday on Saturday, but won't be able to celebrate with a win as an injury led to a TKO loss to Geoff Neal in their welterweight bout at UFC 308.

Watch the closing sequence below.

The official stoppage time was just 90 seconds into the first lap.

Up to this point, Neal had controlled much of the action with his sharp punches, dropping dos Anjos early before getting him back to his feet. Neal continued to put pressure on dos Anjos and after cracking him with another combination, dos Anjos fell back to the mat and clutched his leg. Dos Anjos then made it clear to referee Mark Smith that he could not continue and the fight was stopped.

It is not yet known exactly what injury Anjos suffered.

While Neal (16-6) may not have wanted the fight to end this way, he will be happy to get back on the win list after two straight losses. With the win, Neal increases his UFC record to 8-4.

Neal then used the post-fight interview time to announce that he intends to continue climbing the ladder for an eventual rematch with UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad. The two first fought at UFC Brooklyn in January 2019, with Neal earning a unanimous decision victory over the future titleholder.

This is the third straight loss for dos Anjos (32-17) and the fourth in its last five games.
