Trump prepares team, receives Biden invitation to White House to discuss transition

New Delhi:

President Joe Biden invited President-elect Donald Trump to discuss the transition of power after Vice President Kamala Harris pledged to support a peaceful transition.

Vice President Kamala Harris delivered an impassioned concession speech last night in which she confirmed that she had congratulated Trump on his victory and assured him of her commitment to an orderly transfer of power. “We must accept the results of this election,” she told her supporters. “We owe loyalty not to a president or a party, but to the Constitution.”

According to the Washington Post, President-elect Trump has already begun preparing his administration, with advisers reportedly narrowing down candidates for key Cabinet positions. Candidates for Treasury Secretary include billionaire hedge fund investor John Paulson and economic consultant Scott Bessent.

For secretary of state, Trump's team is considering Senator Marco Rubio and former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell. Among other notable potential appointees, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and chief rival and ally Vivek Ramaswamy are expected to be named to the Cabinet, with Sen. Tom Cotton being considered for defense secretary.

The top priority for Trump's transition team is selecting a chief of staff, with his campaign adviser Susie Wiles reportedly taking the lead alongside Brooke Rollins. According to a Washington Post report, Trump's campaign has vetted thousands of candidates to ensure only loyalists are chosen, as Trump is keen to avoid disloyal figures who could hinder his agenda.

In a statement, Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt assured that personnel decisions would be made soon, while Trump spokesman Steven Cheung confirmed the upcoming White House meeting that marks the start of transition planning.

Several US media reports claim that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could lead an overhaul of health and food safety regulators, a controversial move that is likely to provoke strong reactions given Kennedy's well-known opposition to vaccines.
