Georgia's top elections official expects half of the state's voters will have already cast their ballots by Election Day.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger spoke to Fox News Digital late Tuesday afternoon. At that point, more than one in four residents of the state had voted.

“It's huge. Almost every day was a record breaker,” he told Fox News Digital. “If you look at the voter turnout we're seeing day after day, we'll probably be close to 4 million early votes by the time we close next Friday.”

“I think it’s evidence that voters trust our systems here in Georgia,” he said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 2 million people in Georgia had voted early in person or by mail.

Both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump's campaigns have spent enormous time and resources in Georgia, a state the ex-president lost by less than 1% in 2020.

Early voting there runs from October 15th to November 1st.

Raffensperger's interview also came about an hour before the Georgia Supreme Court ruled against Republicans' attempt to reinstate a series of new ballot security measures ahead of Election Day.

The six rules included a requirement that all machine-recorded ballots be counted manually by county officials to ensure the overall results match, and a provision that only ballots dropped off in dropboxes with video surveillance would be counted.

Proponents of the bill, which included representatives from the Republican Party, argued they were necessary guardrails to ensure voter confidence.

Democrats criticized the rules as an attempt to sow doubt and confusion in what is expected to be a close election in Georgia.

However, Raffensperger was among several Republican state and county officials who also opposed the rules.

“I think right now it would pose really significant challenges because all of the poll workers were trained with the systems that we have, which was really in line with state law,” Raffensperger told Fox News Digital.

He pointed to the Purcell Principle, a precedent set by the Supreme Court that says courts cannot change election rules too close to an election.

“Well, we’re two and a half weeks away from Election Day. So when you think about how close we are to Election Day, it's just too much, too late,” he said.

The Georgia Supreme Court is expected to hear the Republican National Committee's appeal in the lawsuit, but denied its request for an expedited decision, meaning the previous decision that deemed the measures “illegal, unconstitutional and void.” , will remain in effect until Election Day in November. 5.
