ForbesToday's word number 1229 with tips, hints and answers for Wednesday, October 30th

Not only is it the last day of the month, it's also Halloween. Happy Halloween, you wonderful Wordlers! I hope you do something fun. I dress up as The Dude from The Big Lebowski. I'll probably just sit around handing out candy and drinking coffee by the fire. That sounds pretty good. The children will be busy with their friends and everything they do. My daughter turns 17 this year and is a senior in high school, so this is kind of a big Halloween for us – theoretically her last before we leave the nest. Gulp.

Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and this was the puzzle I gave you:

I can start or end a war. I can give you the strength of heroes or leave you powerless. A look may lure me into a trap, but no force can force me to stay. What am I?

Kudos to those of you who solved it. The answer is Love.

Let's solve this word!

Can you solve today's sentence?

SHALE was a poor opening bet today, even though it was usually pretty good. A yellow box and (as I would later learn) 405 solutions remaining! Ouch! For my second guess, I chose TRIED, and this was absolutely as perfect as you can get without guessing the word. There was only one possible word left: WEIRD for the win! Huzzah!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get one point for guessing three and another for beating the Wordle Bot, which took four tries today. 2 points for me! Screw it, Wordle Bot! Ha! I am the king of the world!

Today's Wordle etymology

Today's etymology in the form of a Halloween rhyme:

In ancient times, in feared stories,

A word emerged, the old one strange.

From Old English Wyrd, a thread of fate,

The power to shape what lies ahead.

Three sisters spun myths and traditions

The fates, the Norns of antiquity.

They weaved strange paths, invisible, unclear,

And from their craft, strange the seer.

Once fateful, determined, threads intertwined,

But Shakespeare's witches redefined:

The word became scary, strange and dark,

A haunting cold, a ghostly sign.

So now in nights full of ghouls and ghosts,

We say “how strange” and toast.

To strange shadows and untold stories,

The strange, bizarre and strange unfold.
