    The weather across the country is starting to get cooler and the stakes in college football continue to rise each week. Those who claim that the regular season wouldn't matter as much due to the expanded playoff field and rampant conference realignment ruining regional rivalries may be right, but the trade-off isn't that bad if the schedule tells us something which provides for the games that will take place in week 8.

    Let's just call it a Saturday showdown in the SEC and Big Ten, with two conference games in each league, the outcome of which is expected to have a major impact on the race for the top 12 College Football Playoff spots.

    The top matchup pits No. 1 Texas against No. 4 Georgia in prime time, with the Longhorns looking to establish themselves as national championship favorites. The SEC afternoon matinee pits No. 7 Alabama and No. 11 Tennessee in a game that neither can lose if they want to feel confident about their postseason positioning.

    The Big Ten, meanwhile, has two ranking matchups, with No. 22 Michigan hosting undefeated No. 21 Illinois and No. 25 Nebraska heading on the road to play undefeated No. 18 Indiana. In total, there are six undefeated teams and a total of 18 ranked teams playing games on Saturday. There will definitely be meaningful developments.
