Time Owner Attacks Kamala Harris for Refusing Interview

The owner of Time The magazine criticized Kamala Harris for refusing to sit down for an interview with the publication.

Marc Benioff wrote on

“We believe in transparency and publish every interview in full. Why doesn’t the vice president engage with the public on the same level?”

The magazine published an interview with Donald Trump in April and with President Joe Biden in June before he dropped out of the race.

After Harris became her party's presidential nominee in July, she was criticized for largely avoiding the press.

However, she has been on a media tour in recent weeks, including appearances at 60 minutesthe “Call Her Daddy” podcast and the Stephen Colbert show.

Critics have noted that most of her recent performances are apart from this 60 minuteswere mostly softball interviews.

A profile of Harris published Friday said: Time Reporter Charlotte Alter hinted at Harris' refusal to sit down with the magazine.

“When she does interviews, she primarily prefers local media, culture podcasts or friendly talk shows,” Alter wrote. “In contrast, Trump spoke to a TIME reporter for 90 minutes in two interviews about his political vision. Biden spoke to TIME for a similar length of time before dropping out of the race.”

Although Trump is more open with the media than Harris, he has also been criticized for avoiding difficult interviews and tending to speak to right-wing networks and friendly YouTubers and podcasters.

He withdrew from participation 60 minutes Election special that was to include separate sit-down interviews with both presidential candidates.

Benioff, who was the owner Time has been best known since 2018 for founding the software company Salesforce. He is a major political donor, having donated primarily to the Democratic Party but also to the Republicans over the years.

By Benioff's calculations, Benioff has donated more than $800,000 to the Democratic Party since the 1990s Newsweekbased on donation data from Open Secrets.

In comparison, he donated around $300,000 to the Republican Party during the same period.

These calculations only consider donations to specific candidates and to parties' national and state committees, and not to political action committees affiliated with a party.

According to Open Secrets, Benioff did not donate to any political candidates this election cycle, but did donate to Harris in 2019, as well as several other candidates from both parties.

It is unusual for a media owner and major donor to make such a public attack on a presidential candidate so close to the election.

Newsweek reached out to Harris' campaign and Time Magazine by email outside regular business hours for comments.
