Co-owners Wendy Fincher-Hughes and Owen Hughes of Winnie's Tavern said they were thrilled to welcome Gov. Tim Walz to their business Thursday evening.

Along with America's national security leaders, Walz visited the tavern before his rally at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater.

Fischer-Hughes said she is proud of her restaurant and added that she is committed to ensuring that all of her employees exercise their right to vote regardless of party affiliation.

Some participants in the rally were seen eating in the restaurant. They included New Hanover County Democratic Party Chairwoman Jill Hopman and Stephanie Walker, a member of the New Hanover County Board of Education and candidate for the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners.

Winnie's at 1895 Burnett Blvd. is a popular burger restaurant and one of the oldest in Wilmington. It all started in July 1962 when Winnie Swanson purchased property near Sunset Park that became Winnie's Tavern and Riverfront Mobile Home Park. The mobile home parking space no longer exists – but the restaurant continues to operate.

After his stop at Winnie's, Walz took the stage at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater where he criticized the Trump-Vance campaign and delivered remarks on education, public safety, gun violence, reproductive freedom and other issues.
