Tigers announce starting players for Games 1 and 2 of ALDS

CLEVELAND – Detroit Tigers left-handed pitcher Tyler Holton, who will start Wednesday's series finale in Houston, will take the mound again for Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians.

“I'm not sure how many guys have started in back-to-back games but he will be on the shortlist,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said.

Hinch also confirmed that star Tarik Skubal will start in Game 2, putting him in position to pitch again in a possible Game 5 if needed.

The best-of-five ALDS begins Saturday at 1:08 p.m. at Progressive Field.

Holton pitched a scoreless first inning against the Astros and could go a little deeper against the Guardians, who have a left-heavy lineup.

With Holton out, right-hander Reese Olson is a strong candidate to pitch multiple innings. However, Hinch could also opt for a full bullpen game without relying on a traditional bulk reliever.

Holton has emerged as one of the top relievers in baseball over the past two seasons, posting a 7-2 record with a 2.19 ERA over 94 1/3 innings in 2024.

“The slow heartbeat allows me to use it at any time,” Hinch said. “He’s the type of pitcher you want in any situation.

“It’s also important to be able to get everyone out. It has parking spaces for everyone. He can be creative. He can be stubborn. He’s a strike thrower.”
