Three takeaways from UAB's 44-10 loss to the Army Black Knights

In a duel of medieval legends, the Black Knights of Army met the Dragons of UAB.

Unlike the epic tales of yesteryear, there was no Battle of the Dragons, a theme far too consistent with the UAB football team this season.

UAB's quarterback problems continued as Jalen Kitna showed flashes, throwing for 242 yards and a touchdown, but gave the ball back to the Knights three times with two picks and a sack on fourth down. They were turnovers that the Blazers couldn't afford against Army's offense.

Army quarterback Bryson Daily continued to play like one of the best quarterbacks in the country, rushing for 136 yards and adding 102 yards and a touchdown through the air.

The Black Knights extended the nation's longest winning streak and won their 10th straight game since 2023 to move to 6-0 on the season.

UAB falls to 1-5 for the first time since 2012.

Here are the findings from Saturday morning:

UAB's run defense is by far its biggest weakness

Army entered this week's contest as the nation's leading rushing attack and UAB ranked in the bottom 10 in rush defense.

Daily finished the game averaging 11.4 yards per carry and had a hat trick of rushing touchdowns before the first quarter ended. He finished the day with four and added another in the third quarter before Army brought its backups into the game.

Running back Kanye Udoh was unstoppable, rushing for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Noah Short added another 42 yards on the ground.

UAB rebuilt its entire interior defensive line in the offseason, adding Derrick Shepard, LD Cox and Demarcus Smith, all highly regarded transfer tackles.

This was a necessity after the Blazers struggled to stop the run throughout 2023, but the numbers have somehow worsened.

They couldn't stop Daily and the Knights, even when they manned the line of scrimmage with six defensive linemen at the points, to no avail.

Kam Shanks is the Blazers' only star

Surprisingly, there was a bright spot in today's game for UAB. Redshirt freshman receiver Kam Shanks exploded for 119 yards on 9 catches, cementing his claim as the most electric player in this Blazers offense.

He burst onto the scene in Week 1 against Alcorn State with a 73-yard reception and a punt return touchdown, but has had a handful of quiet games since then.

On UAB's fifth offensive drive of the game, Shanks caught the ball three times for a total of 78 yards, pulling the Blazers offense on his back into the red zone before a turnover on downs gave the ball back to the Black Knights.

It was one of two UAB trips into the red zone.

He will face an increased workload moving forward if the UAB offense wants to be able to generate real scoring opportunities in the future.

UAB needs to make a big change

What that big change is is anyone's guess, but it needs to happen, and soon, if this team wants to salvage any shred of hope for the future from this season.

This program, once the proud poster child for resiliency in college football, has been reduced to a weekly affair in which opposing teams do whatever they want to the Blazers with almost no resistance.

Except for the September game at Arkansas, the team didn't appear to be physically or mentally ready in a single game.

UAB's road to college football relevance is hard enough, they don't need anyone in the program, which makes it even harder.

It's hard to say exactly where things are going wrong with this team, as we've heard week after week that the staff doesn't expect these absences during practice week. What is important, however, is that they happen.

Whether it's a changing of the guard at a coordinator or even a head coach position, something needs to change in Birmingham.

UAB head coach Trent Dilfer said it best last week: β€œβ€¦to the fans, you deserve more, the city of Birmingham deserves more.”
