This titanium EDC folding fan turns you into a real Kitana from Mortal Kombat

Most EDC enthusiasts are familiar with the few common formats – knives, screwdrivers, multitools, wallets, sometimes even stationery. A folding fan, on the other hand, is not a “conventional EDC,” but the folks at Titaner have a way to turn it into something cool that everyone would love to own. Titaner's Titan DIY Folding Fan feels like something straight out of an action hero's gear – think Kitana from Mortal Kombat, but with a practical, everyday twist. Even though Kitana wields her metal fans with deadly precision, Fan 4.0 is not for slicing and dicing. Instead, it combines elegance, craftsmanship and utility in an EDC device that is as sophisticated as it is functional. Redesigned using titanium instead of bamboo wood, the Titanium DIY Folding Fan is a modernized version of the original EDC from ancient Asia. Equal parts fan and self-defense tool (if you know how to use it), the Titanium DIY Folding Fan (or Fan 4.0 as its creators call it) is a unique addition to your EDC collection that works for both men and women for women – especially given the heatwave we are currently experiencing!

This titanium EDC folding fan turns you into a real Kitana from Mortal Kombat

A titanium EDC folding fan may be niche, but the folks at Titaner are no strangers to the EDC industry. They've worked on 9 other successful EDC campaigns, so it's perfect that for the 10th campaign they're going beyond the boring multi-tools and working on something that has a little more pizzazz. Simply put, the Fan 4.0 is a tool to beat the heat and other situations that may require combat. We don't condone violence, but hey, the idea of defending yourself with just a folding fan sounds incredibly cool. The fan's titanium construction gives it robustness and makes it a baton when closed. Use it as a striking tool to defend yourself and when you feel confident, fan the sweat with your foldable titanium fan. I'm not going to lie, that sounds absolutely evil.

The Fan 4.0 brings a fresh, modern twist to the ancient art of fan folding, offering a unique combination of tradition and innovation, past and future, and culture and purpose. Constructed of a titanium frame (known for its high strength to weight ratio), the fan is designed to last without sacrificing elegance when it comes to longevity. Slimmed down to reduce weight, the ribs are diamond-shaped and tapered to provide a more ergonomic grip and ensure comfort whether you're fanning yourself in the heat or showcasing its impressive craftsmanship. For a touch of luxury, the ribs are inlaid with strips of natural mother-of-pearl, adding a shimmering, oceanic sheen to the otherwise industrial look. These inlays, carefully incorporated into the surface of the fan, provide a traditional craftsmanship that contrasts beautifully with the robust titanium structure. The fan's waterproof silk fabric – another nod to beauty and practicality – keeps it light, flexible and impervious to moisture, ensuring it stays in top condition even after long periods of use. The combination of these elements – titanium, mother of pearl and silk – creates a fan that is both a tool and an accessory, combining functionality with undeniable style.

Optimized center of gravity for a more comfortable grip.

Hidden fan nails for comfortable grip.

If you've ever struggled with a folding fan that was too tight or flapped around pointlessly, you'll appreciate the technology used here. The Fan 4.0 features a tool-free tension adjustment system that works without screws and without having to drill your nail into grooves to tighten or loosen the fan swivel. A simple twist of the pop-out T-shaped knob adjusts the tension to your liking, whether you prefer a crisp click when opening or a more leisurely glide. And thanks to a clever design optimization that limits the protrusion of the T-shaped knob, you don't have to worry about overtightening and losing the tension nail. Once you're done adjusting, the knob slides back into its housing and sits flush against the fan's handle.

Of course, none of this would matter if the fan didn't feel good in your hand. Traditional folding fans can be cumbersome, but Titaner has taken a different approach. The fan fins have been slimmed down, making them lighter without sacrificing strength. This seemingly minor change makes a big difference in usability without compromising the fan's overall experience. It still looks and feels like a traditional folding fan made from thinly sliced bamboo leaves. It's probably slightly heavier than traditional fans, but the downside is that while bamboo can crack or even rot when exposed to moisture, titanium cannot. The balance and weight distribution are also fine-tuned, so you can use it comfortably for long periods of time without tiring your hands. Whether you're in a humid area or even dry heat, the Titan fan folds up elegantly so you can fan yourself to relieve the heat. The compact design means it fits right in your bag, so you don't have to leave the fan lying around somewhere as it would be exposed to direct sunlight, which could make the titanium metal hot. I mean, you wouldn't leave an EDC out in broad daylight anyway, right?!

The practicality of the Fan 4.0 goes beyond the mere function of a conventional folding fan. Sure, it's also a pretty cool fidget toy and a conversation starter – but it also has potential as a self-defense device. I don't condone violence here at all, but in an emergency, the Closed Fan 4.0 is more than strong enough to be used as a striking tool. The titanium base (where the pivot is located) can break through most types of glass and can even be used to defend against attacks. However, don't expect Mortal Kombat-style warfare – Kitana's gun-toting fans are a completely different breed.

Fan 4.0 isn't just for collectors or those with a flair for the dramatic – it has something for everyone. It comes in three sizes – 9.2 inches, 11.8 inches and 13.4 inches – and weighs between 120.5 grams (4.2 ounces) and 237 grams (8.3 ounces). As for designs, you have three to choose from, from a sumi-e horse graphic to an ancient Chinese saying to a fluid art pattern inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night. Whether you want something compact enough to fit in a bag or prefer a larger fan with more presence, there's an option for you. Priced at $305 on Kickstarter, this fan might turn heads with its price tag, but it's not about luxury for luxury's sake. You are not just buying a fan, but an expertly crafted device that combines antique design with modern innovation. The Titaner Titanium DIY Folding Fan is a perfect example of how even the simplest tools can be redesigned and perfected for today's world.
