'This is not the time': Volusia County officials warn against beach visits after Hurricane Milton

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla – Officials in Volusia County are asking residents and visitors to stay away from the beach because of debris from Hurricane Milton.

According to a news release, the coastline continues to pose a safety risk due to debris on the beach and in the water.

“After Hurricane Milton passes, people may be eager to visit the beach to take photos, but now is not the time,” the press release reads in part.

In addition to the debris, officials warn of high waves and dangerous currents that “can pull the strongest swimmers underwater.”

According to the release, the Volusia County Coastal Department was unable to begin clearing debris from beaches due to high tide.

However, officials said you should wear shoes while walking on the beach to prevent foot injuries. Residents and visitors should not cross barricades, fences or gates to restricted areas.

Officials also warned that some coastal structures such as vehicle driveways and walkways were impacted by the impacts of Hurricane Milton and may no longer be safe.

“Although a structure may not show visible signs of damage, there may be fundamental or other underlying problems that could lead to collapse,” the release said.

Officials said Beach Safety will be raising the red flag throughout the weekend due to very dangerous rip current conditions.
