The Yankees projected $18.5 million for the All-Star in conjunction with the Phillies as a surprise hit in free agency

At the end of the 2024 Major League Baseball season, there are more questions than answers for the disappointed Philadelphia Phillies.

Every aspect of the Phillies' roster let them down in their playoff loss to the hated New York Mets. The rotation behind star Zack Wheeler was shallow, the lineup failed to produce much in three of the four games, and the bullpen collapsed at every opportunity.

This bullpen, which was considered a strength for the Phillies throughout the regular season, appears to be a potential weak point in 2025. Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez are both free agents, so the Phillies don't currently have a surefire closer on the roster.

Both Hoffman and Estévez appear to be natural free agent targets, but there may be a wild card lurking on the New York Yankees' World Series roster. On Friday, FanSided's Zach Pressnell named Yankees All-Star Clay Holmes as a possible Phillies addition this winter.

“Holmes was the victim of an incredible amount of criticism and hate in the second half of 2024. “It would be completely understandable if Holmes didn’t want to return to the Bronx in 2025,” Pressnell said.

“Holmes could fill a lot of different roles in Philly's bullpen, and he wouldn't have the same burden on his shoulders as he did being the closer of the biggest market in the entire league. That makes sense for both sides.”

Holmes, 31, had a difficult second half of the season, losing his closer role to emerging backup Luke Weaver. But since arriving in New York in 2021, he is still one of the most consistent relievers in baseball, with a 2.69 ERA in 220 appearances in the pinstripes.

While the Phillies may not want to use him as a closer right away, Holmes could be one of the best players in the league and also have a shot at the job in the ninth inning. And his current salary projection from The Athletic's Jim Bowden (two years, $18.5 million) seems entirely reasonable.
