In a press release, the governor's office announced that Amtrak is adding two cars to the express, increasing the number of seats from 268 to approximately 402. Amtrak is also expanding its holiday service, offering rides on the Winter Park Express December 20-22 and December 27-29. December 2024.

“The Winter Park Express Ski Train has long been a beloved tradition for Colorado and our guests from around the world. “It has demonstrated the desire of both residents and visitors for transportation options other than passenger vehicles,” Sky Foulkes, president of Winter Park Resort, said in a news release.

“The Winter Park Express gives people another way to get to the slopes that is more scenic, sustainable and relaxing than getting in a car and driving.”

The Winter Park Express dates back to 1940, the same year Winter Park Resort opened for skiing. The train was originally called the “Ski Train”. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad operated the line until 2009.

Amtrak brought the train back in 2015 for a one-day event. It was so popular that Amtrak added a second day. The railroad officially brought the train back in 2017 under the name Winter Park Express.
