The US has a democracy problem thanks to the electoral college

To the editor: The majority wins until they lose. With its electoral college, the United States no longer responds to the will of the people. (“The U.S. alone has an electoral college. How did that happen?” Oct. 29 statement.)

If an issue receives two-thirds support from voters, action should be taken. For example, abolishing the Electoral College, protecting abortion rights, passing gun safety laws, and passing comprehensive immigration reform enjoy strong majority support. But nothing is being done.

Although unlikely, it is possible that Vice President Kamala Harris wins the Electoral College votes while former President Trump wins the popular vote. Republican outrage would likely surpass the frustration Democrats felt in 2000 and 2016.

“Get over it” is not a phrase that softens anger. With the other foot, constitutional reform would certainly be accelerated and passed.

Otherwise, continuing down this path will lead to ugly resentment and polarization. Tyranny of the minority is just that – tyranny.

To the editor: In his excellent article about our bizarre electoral college system, historian Joseph J. Ellis notes that the Founding Fathers agreed that we must never have a monarch above the law.

But I'm pretty sure he didn't say that the recent Supreme Court decision to the contrary “heartily” contradicted that core belief. I'm pretty sure this is just another typo from the esteemed Los Angeles Times.

When I come across such glaring typos, I push the paper aside. Typos call into question the integrity of the paper. Please hire more editors, otherwise it stinks.
