Schools, buses, local governments and many businesses are closed in Fairbanks Monday as a winter storm with 10 to 10 inches of snow and freezing rain is expected to last through Tuesday morning.

Fairbanks North Star Borough Schools is closed to keep school buses and cars off the road. Parents were notified via email Sunday evening when freezing rain and icy roads were forecast for the Fairbanks and North Pole areas, as well as Two Rivers, Eielson Air Force Base and Salcha, Goldstream Valley and Nenana.

District officials said in a statement that canceling school due to inclement weather was difficult, but they consulted multiple sources to make an informed decision. Depending on the weather, school is expected to resume as planned on Tuesday, and the district will contact parents with any changes.

The University of Alaska also informed students, faculty and staff Sunday evening that in-person classes on Monday would be canceled. It urged employees to use their discretion to decide whether it is safe for them to travel to work, and if they cannot make it to work safely, they should work remotely or take leave.

Buses from the local transport system MACS will also not run on Monday.

Most district buildings and services are closed during the day. This includes the Noel Wien Library, where there would be a candidate forum for seats in the Alaska Senate and House of Representatives. The forum is now online and airing on KUAC-FM.

Inland areas such as Delta Junction, Healy and Anderson may experience similar conditions on Monday. The state Department of Transportation is updating road conditions on Alaska 511.
