NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

An alert issued this morning has expired.

Update, 5 p.m

Today's alert has expired since 5:00 p.m

Previous coverage

The National Weather Service today issued a Red Flag Warning for leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands, warning of dangerous fire weather conditions due to locally strong trade winds and low relative humidity.

The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and affects leeward portions of the islands of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii. Winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts of up to 40 mph are expected, according to the NWS. Relative humidity can drop to as low as 40 to 45 percent.

Weather officials warn that the combination of strong winds, dry fuels and low humidity could lead to extreme fire behavior. Ignited fires could spread quickly, but the warning does not predict new fires.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burns and park vehicles in areas without dry vegetation as exhaust systems can start fires. Additionally, activities that could produce sparks should be postponed until the wind subsides.
