The NY Mets salvage their season with a win in NLCS Game 5 over the Dodgers

play

NEW YORK – The New York Mets do their best work when their backs are against the wall.

They proved it again on Friday night in an elimination game in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After two fumbles in the first two games at Citi Field, the Mets' offense exploded and earned a 12-6 victory over the Dodgers in front of 43,841 fans at Citi Field.

In doing so, the Mets forced a return trip to Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium for Game 6 at 8:08 p.m. on Sunday. The Dodgers hold a 3-2 lead in the series.

After scoring a total of two runs in consecutive losses to the Dodgers in Flushing, the Mets put up eight runs in the first three innings.

Pete Alonso lit up Citi Field with a three-run home run off the Dodgers' Jack Flaherty on a shin-high slider in the first inning. In the third inning, the Mets hit Flaherty for five more runs on four hits and two walks. It was a stark contrast from Game 1, when Flaherty held the Mets scoreless for seven innings.

Starling Marte led the charge in the third inning with a two-run double. It was a career game for Marte, who was 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI.

It was enough to withstand a burst of power from the Dodgers in the middle three innings, including two four-run homers from Andy Pages and a solo shot from Mookie Betts.

Here's our analysis of the Mets' NLCS Game 5 win over the Dodgers on Friday:

Edwin Diaz closes the scoring with two strong innings

With a taxing bullpen, the Mets needed Edwin Diaz to win the final two innings against the top of the Dodgers lineup.

Diaz pitched a perfect eighth inning with strikeouts from Andy Pages and Shohei Ohtani. Then in the ninth, Diaz collected a trio of fly balls to get around an infield single by Tommy Edman and give the Mets a 12-6 victory.

The Mets continue to respond to the Dodgers' rallies

The bottom-scoring Mets kept the team out of reach of the Dodgers with another run in the sixth inning.

Jesse Winker was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a Starling-Marte double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff McNeil to make the Mets 11-6. Marte is 3-for-4 with three doubles, two RBI and a run scored.

The Dodgers get back within four runs against Reed Garrett and Ryne Stanek

The Dodgers aren't going down without a fight.

Early in the fifth inning, with the Mets leading 10-2, Reed Garrett allowed two baserunners a hit via pitch and walk before Andy Pages ripped an inside cutter for a three-run home run.

Carlos Mendoza then challenged Ryne Stanek, who eliminated Shohei Ohtani. But Stanek couldn't get ahead of Mookie Betts, who added a solo home run with a hanging slider to bring the Dodgers to within 10-6 in the middle of the sixth.

The Mets offense continues to fire against the Dodgers bullpen

After Brent Honeywell entered the game in the fourth, the Mets scored two more runs and extended their lead to 10-2.

Jesse Winker hit an RBI triple to right field and Jeff McNeil added a sacrifice fly to center field.

David Peterson went to fourth and Reed Garrett was stranded on the bases with a full load

David Peterson's night ended in the fourth inning after he gave up a two-out home run to Andy Pages, a bloop single to Shohei Ohtani and back-to-back walks to Mookie Betts and Tesoscar Hernandez.

Reed Garrett kept the Dodgers there by freezing Freddie Freeman with an outside slider. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Mets' lead is 8-2.

Mets hit Jack Flaherty for five runs in the third inning

The brakes are off on the Mets offense.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Mets lined up their entire lineup against the Dodgers' Jack Flaherty. After consecutive walks, Starling Marte belted a two-run double down the left field line.

Then, with two outs, Francisco Alvarez ripped an RBI single, Francisco Lindor added an RBI triple and Brandon Nimmo missed an RBI single to extend the Mets' lead to 8-1.

Flaherty, who shut out the Mets in Game 1, allowing just two hits, needed 29 pitches to get through the third game. He allowed two walks and four hits in the frame.

The Dodgers score a run on David Peterson's wild pitch

After a leadoff walk to Kike Hernandez and a bloop single by Andy Pages put runners on the corners, David Peterson hit a sinker, allowing the Dodgers to cut the Mets' deficit to 3-1.

With two runners on and two out, Peterson blocked Mookie Betts to set up a pop-up for Pete Alonso.

Pete Alonso gives the Mets the lead with a three-run home run

In two NLCS home games at Citi Field, the Mets had no runners in scoring position. Pete Alonso dealt the Mets the biggest blow of the series at the end of the first round.

After Francisco Lindor hit a single and Brandon Nimmo walked, Alonso blasted a low slider over the centerfield wall to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. It was a 432-foot shot from Alonso, who tied Mark Viento with four home runs this postseason.

David Peterson gives up two leadoff hits and keeps the Dodgers scoreless in first

The top of the Dodgers lineup made their presence known early in the first inning, but David Peterson was able to keep the rest of their offense in check.

Shohei Ohtani put the game ahead with a single through the middle that was just out of reach for Jeff McNeil. Then Mookie Betts sent a line drive into the right-center field gap that bounced off the glove of a leaping Starling Marte.

From there, Peterson got a ground ball from Teoscar Hernandez, a line drive out from Freddie Freeman and a strikeout from Tommy Edman, keeping the game scoreless.
