The NFL releases a statement regarding the Lions' Jameson Williams, pending investigation

Following reports that Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has sought an arrest warrant for carrying a concealed weapon, the NFL released a statement on Tuesday.

“The Lions immediately notified the league upon learning of the matter. We have no further comment at this time,” the statement said.

According to WXYZ-TV, Williams was briefly arrested by Detroit police officers and then released after an alleged traffic stop for speeding on Oct. 8 near the corner of Conner and Jefferson. The police department has since launched an investigation into why Williams was released and filed an arrest warrant application with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

The WXYZ-TV report states that Williams, 23, was sitting in the passenger seat of a car driven by his brother when officers stopped the car for speeding. Williams' brother, the driver, immediately told officers there were two guns in the car, one registered to each brother, the report said.

A problem reportedly arose because Williams did not have a concealed handgun license and improperly stored his weapon under the passenger seat. However, Williams' brother had a CPL. According to the report, Williams was arrested at the scene before being released.

The Lions issued a statement on Tuesday saying: “Jameson immediately brought to our attention that he was a passenger in a routine traffic stop on October 8th. We have discussed the incident with him and informed the league of what we know. We understand him.” was released without incident or citation. It is our understanding that the Detroit Police Department has reinvestigated the matter and we will have no further comment out of respect for the legal process.

Williams, selected 12th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, has 17 catches for 361 yards (21.2 yards per catch) and three touchdowns in six games this season. Williams is serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances and missed Sunday's 52-14 win over the Tennessee Titans.
