Republicans in Georgia appear confident that the state's record-breaking early voting numbers will benefit their 2024 presidential candidate.

“The voter turnout was record-breaking, something incredible — votes from all over the state,” Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones told Fox News Digital. “I think the enthusiasm, the momentum is with President Trump.”

The former commander in chief lost Georgia by less than 1% in 2020, and Republicans have invested enormous time and resources to win it back on November 5th.

A key part of that strategy was convincing people to vote early, traditionally a voting method favored by Democrats.

And both parties’ emphasis on early voting has had jarring effects. During early voting between Oct. 15 and Nov. 1, nearly 4 million Georgians cast their votes in person or by absentee ballot, more than half of the state's active voters.

According to Georgia Votes, over 700,000 people who already voted in 2024 did not vote at all in 2020.

Meanwhile, the three counties with the highest voter turnout are the rural areas that Trump won in 2020.

Both factors are favorable indicators for the ex-president, argued Jones.

“We have many voters who voted in 2016 but did not vote in 2020. … What makes me think they are Trump voters is that most of them … come from parts of the state that are pretty strong Republican strongholds,” he said.

“You start to break down where they live, where they've been in the past, the Republican maps they've drawn in the past, and like I said, the enthusiasm locally for (Trump) is pretty much off right now liked the frame.” “

Asked why he believes some of Trump's supporters didn't vote in 2020 but are voting now, Jones said: “I'll be honest with you. I think there are a lot of people who just felt like the president had victory in his pocket in 2020.

“Sometimes I wonder if this false sense of security has hurt us in 2020.”

Still, it will be difficult to get a full picture of how well Republicans' early voting strategy has paid off until after Election Day.

According to Georgia Votes, Hispanic voters make up the largest share of those who voted in early 2024 but did not vote at all in 2020, 37.6% of that number.

About 72% of people who voted in early 2024 also did so in 2020 – about 2.6 million people.

About 8.3%, just over 305,000 people, voted in early 2024 after voting on Election Day in 2020.
