The forward march was halted when Buena Fire burned near Watsonville – KION546

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) – The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office says further progress in fighting the Buena fire near Watsonville on Highway 1 has stopped.

A sheriff's office spokesman said 20 homes had to be evacuated and the fire grew to two acres before firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control.

Some evacuation orders are now reduced to evacuation warnings, according to the county's evacuation map.

Multiple agencies responded, including Central Fire, with Cal Fire CZU taking the lead in fighting the fire.

Cal Fire CZU confirms they responded to reports of multiple fires in the area between Buena Vista and Airport Boulevard.

CHP Santa Cruz confirms that Highway 1 northbound at Airport Boulevard is closed due to the fire.

The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds is currently being used as an evacuation point.
