Team USA travels north to Skate Canada International

A U.S. delegation full of international experience travels north to the second stop of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series – Skate Canada International – taking place October 25-27 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Of the 12 U.S. skaters participating, all have Grand Prix experience and seven of the 12 have represented Team USA at a World Championships.

Team USA's top two men from the last two seasons are both traveling to Canada.

Ilia Malininthe reigning world champion, is taking part in the Grand Prix series for the second weekend in a row. This past weekend, the two-time U.S. champion won his third consecutive gold at Skate America, becoming the fourth American to achieve the feat. With an eye on securing a place in the Grand Prix Final, Malinin will be hoping to continue his winning streak. He did not lose in the 2024 calendar year and won a medal in every Grand Prix he competed in.

In the last two seasons Jason Brown has secured two silver medals at the U.S. Championships and two top-five finishes at the World Championships. However, this is his return to the Grand Prix series for the first time since 2021 as Brown begins preparing for his run at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The two-time Olympian and nine-time Grand Prix medalist started his season with bronze at the Shanghai Trophy earlier this month.

With the ladies Alysa Liu is making her comeback to the Grand Prix series after retiring at the end of the 2021/22 season. Upon her return to international competition at the Budapest Trophy just two weeks ago, the 2022 Olympian and world bronze medalist left no doubt that she was indeed back and conquering the top step of the podium.

Like Malinin, Elyce Lin Gracey will compete for the second weekend in a row. At Skate America, Lin-Gracey placed sixth in her Grand Prix debut, but has shown this season that she is capable of competing with the best skaters in the world, winning the Nebelhorn Trophy by one score , which would have been on the podium at the last World Championships season.

The only pair entry for Team USA, Emily Chan and Spencer Howe He missed the Grand Prix series last season as Howe recovered from shoulder surgery. The season before, 2022, they won two silver medals. The two-time Four Continents silver medalists were hoping for a return to the podium and finished fourth in their season debut at the Shanghai Trophy.

Hoping to build on a breakthrough season that saw them take bronze in ice dance at the U.S. Championships, earning their spot on the 2024 World Team, Emily Bratti and Ian Somerville started their season earlier this month with silver at the Budapest Trophy, where they set new international personal bests for rhythm dance, free dance and overall scores.

Also competing for Team USA Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik and sibling duo Oona Brown and Gage Brownwho will both be competing at Skate Canada International for the second year in a row.

Last season, the Browns finished fourth in the event, their best finish in the Grand Prix series. The 2022 Junior World Champions won two silver medals at the start of the season, including at the Denis Ten Memorial.

Zingas and Kolesnik started their season on the podium with bronze at the Nebelhorn Trophy. They finished fifth in both Grand Prix events last season.

Competition begins Friday with the pairs and women's short programs. Saturday begins with the men's rhythm dance and short program, before the first medals are awarded following the pairs' and women's free skate. The competition ends on Sunday with the men's free dance and free dance.
