Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried star in thriller 'The Housemaid'

Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried will star in Paul Feig's adaptation of The Housemaid, the novel by Freida McFadden, set at Lionsgate.

Sweeney's contract is finalized and Seyfried is in final negotiations for the psychological thriller based on the 2022 bestseller.

In the film, Sweeney will play Millie, a troubled young woman who is relieved to have a fresh start as a housemaid for upscale, wealthy couple Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew. Millie soon learns that the family's secrets are far more dangerous than her own.

Rebecca Sonnenshine wrote the screenplay.

Todd Lieberman will produce for Hidden Pictures and Carly Kleinbart Elter will oversee the project. Feigco's Feig and Laura Fischer also serve as producers, and Sweeney and Seyfried will serve as executive producers alongside Alex Young and McFadden.

“I'm thrilled that 'The Housemaid' is part of our upcoming slate,” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, in a statement. “A great filmmaker and a great cast with a great script from a great book is a great place to start. My experience working with Paul and Amanda so far has been nothing short of spectacular and Sydney is as talented and compelling as can be.”

Erin Westerman, co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, added: “Part of the fun of the book was imagining the cast as we read it, and Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are perfect for Millie and Nina – them are both mysterious, nuanced and incredibly adept at becoming characters who don't give everything away right away.”

Chelsea Kujawa and Erin Jones-Wesley oversee Lionsgate; Robert Melnik negotiated the contracts for the studio.

The Housemaid has been on the NYT bestseller list for 75 weeks and has sold 3.6 million copies in English alone – the book has been translated into 40 languages.

There are few actresses busier these days than Sydney Sweeney. The Euphoria starlet appeared this year in Madame Web, Immaculate and Ron Howard's festival film Eden. She is currently working on an untitled biopic about boxer Christy Martin and will soon return for the third season of Euphoria.

Seyfried appeared in “I Don't Understand You,” which premiered at SXSW this year, and will appear in Atom Egoyan's upcoming “Seven Veils.”

Feig most recently directed “Jackpot!” for Amazon Studios, as well as directing and producing a sequel to his 2018 film “A Simple Favour.”

Sweeney is represented by Paradigm, imPRint and Stewart Brookman and Hansen Jacobson Teller Hoberman. Seyfried is represented by Innovative and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz. Feig is represented by CAA and Sloane, Offer, Weber, Dern. McFadden is represented by Christina Hogrebe of Jane Rotrosen Agency, Angela Cheng Caplan of Cheng Caplan Company and Allison Binder of Goodman Genow Schenkman Smelkinson + Christopher.

Deadline first reported the news.
