Vice President Harris and former President Donald Trump traveled west yesterday to make their closing statements the campaign to voters in the critical swing states of Arizona and Nevada. Both candidates hope to win over Latino voters in the states and talk about border security, one of the biggest issues in the campaign. While in Arizona, Harris criticized Trump's comments at a rally on Wednesday where he claimed he would protect women “whether the women like it or not.” She framed the comment as a warning about the possible consequences of a second Trump presidency for women.

  • 🎧 Almost every day this week, Harris has addressed things Trump wanted to highlight their argument that he's unfit for office, tells NPR's Tamara Keith First up. Trump is working to win over Latino voters and distance himself from the “garbage” comment a comedian made about Puerto Rico at one of his rallies. Trump is also trying to walk back the narrative after President Biden appeared to say Trump supporters were trash before clarifying he was talking about the comedian's bad joke.

The Department of Labor will provide an update on the labor market this morning. This came after several economic reports this week that showed the US economy appeared to be in good shape.

  • 🎧 The upcoming jobs report is expected to show significantly slower job growth in Octobersaid NPR's Scott Horsley. This slowdown is being influenced by factors such as the Boeing strike and other labor disputes, as well as the temporary effects of hurricanes Helene and Milton. In the summer and early fall, consumer spending rose 3.7% annually, driven largely by solid wage increases. Overall, economic data released this week was largely positive: inflation fell, wages rose and the economy grew at a healthy pace.

Thousands of union activists will go door to door in swing states this weekend because there is a lot at stake for them in this election. Over the past four years, many have felt that the Biden-Harris administration has supported them by joining them on the picket lines, creating more union jobs through legislation and expanding overtime pay. Some say they now view Trump as a threat because of policies that weakened federal employee unions during his presidency.

  • 🎧 NPR's Andrea Hsu says unions know Trump has strong support from white, working-class voters, including some of their members. In the customer survey, they want to highlight comments Trump recently made when he joked with Elon Musk about firing striking workers and recalled that he hated paying overtime and would simply hire more workers to avoid that . Although they are making great efforts, the persuasion phase of the campaign is largely complete, says Hsu. On the other hand, previous research also shows that simply asking people whether they want to vote increases the likelihood that they will vote.

Behind the story

I have had OCD most of my life. It started in fourth grade with a fear of vomiting and led to avoiding germs, sick people, moving vehicles, and situations with no clear outcome.

In middle school, I couldn't eat anything without saying a prayer firstotherwise I was convinced I would vomit. I had to drop out of my Spanish minor in college, which required studying abroad, because I refused to get on a plane where I or someone close to me might puke.

In January I took my first flight in five years and have taken 16 flights since then!

After avoiding air travel due to my OCD, I flew to Mexico City—my first international flight in years.

Growing up, my parents and I had heard about OCD, but didn't know it could manifest the way I experienced it. This lack of understanding delayed my diagnosis and eventual treatment – and I'm not alone.

Those who experience violent or sexually intrusive thoughts also tend to delay treatment because they stay calm, says Dr. Christopher Pittenger, the director of the OCD Research Clinic at Yale. They know that the thoughts they have are irrational, but they cannot get rid of them.

I talked to people who live with a variety of intrusive thoughts about harming yourself or others, questioning your own sexual orientation and separating from your partner despite healthy relationships.

I'm not offended when people say, “I have OCD like that.” although what they really mean is “I like to keep my rooms tidy” – but until the extent of the disorder is better understood, getting help won't get any easier for those of us suffering from lesser-known forms of OCD.
